Flu Shots

Via Rachel, a suggestion about how to handle the flu vaccine shortage:

Flu shot shortage
If you won't likely die as a result of catching the flu, then would ya back off and let the elderly and sick people have the vaccine? Please? Every dose given to someone like me is a dose that can't be given to someone like my Grandma. Let's be reasonable here.

What do you think?

If we could guarantee all the sick and elderly getting the vaccine, that would be good. Otherwise, vaccinating people who won't die prevents them from giving it to the unvaccinated elderly woman at the grocery store.
Here, the vaccine is usually given to sick and elderly first anyway.

I think flu vaccines are a crock! The very people who "should" get them -- elderly, sick -- have comprimised immune systems for pete's sake! What good is a flu shot going to do, they're more likely to GET the flu from it. Besides, it's LAST YEAR'S FLU!!! This year's flu has mutated from that and won't have a vaccine until . . .next year! At least that's my layman's understanding of it all. Anyway, someone else can have my $100 shot. And the shots of all 3 of my kids.

The thing about vaccinating a population is that it's not linear. The more people you get vaccinated in a population, the less potential carriers you have and therefore it's less likely that anyone gets it. That said, we really need to figure out a way to put together an adequate supply of vaccine one of these years.
