Who Writes These Headlines?

Excuse me? Somebody can honestly, with a straight face, suggest that the Republicans are stepping over the line for going after Nancy "what-did-she-know-and-when-did-she-know-it" Pelosi? Have they been blind and deaf for the past 8 years? Do I have to remind anyone about Bush being Hitler, Cheney being Darth Vader and all that?

Good freaking grief.

Boomer Radio

Today's major, earth-shattering question.

What in the bleep does "Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys" mean??

(It's a song by a band called Traffic. Look it up.)

Spam Sushi

You think I'm kidding, right?

Think again:

To explain... I signed up for a brief garde manger class at the community college. Most of my classmates are budding wanna-be chefs; I am the oldest person in the class and apparently the only one taking it strictly for my own amusement.

(Garde manger is fancy foodie-talk for cold food; salads, appetizers, that sort of thing. No, I never knew that until I signed up for this class.)

Last week we learned how to roll sushi. The chef/professor said spam sushi was surprisingly good--and he was right. I don't do seafood in any form, raw or cooked, so I went for the spam, which the chef fried up for our use in a process that involved a lot of uninvited fire. He nearly burned down the kitchen.... In all the excitement I forgot to ask him what he fried it in; but I believe if I do it myself at home, I'll use sesame oil. Good stuff.

My sushi included also cucumber, carrots and avocado slivers--and it's rolled in colorful soy covers instead of that seaweed stuff. Okay, they were a little lopsided... but not bad for a very first attempt ever, and they tasted pretty good.

I do not take credit for the fancy little vegetable garnishes; those were made by our youngest classmate, who is only 13 but loves to cook.

You can look here if you want to see some of the other classroom creations, as well as a picture of our 13 year old budding chef with her own sushi platter.

Tomorrow afternoon is the last class, and I expect I'll be posting a few more pictures then.

Free Groceries!

At Whole Foods, no less.

Apparently, all you have to do is walk out of the store without paying for your groceries--and they won't do a thing to stop you. Not only that... if they try to stop you, and one of the employees touches you, THEY will be fired and you will be allowed to go on your merry way. Because, you see, Whole Foods employees are not allowed to touch a customer for any reason. Apparently a shoplifter is still considered a customer. Is that dumb or what?

I fully expect a rash of unencumbered shoplifting to start plaguing the chain. They have just announced to the world that they will roll over and let you walk away. They might even hold the door open for you. How very polite of them.

Actually, the guy's manager should have been fired, since he was the one who yelled for help in the first place, to stop the thief. And then, when the employee restrained the thief, the manager told him to let the thief go, which he did. And then he got fired.
